How to choose remote support software

2026-09-03 · 8 min read

Remote support software is easy to trial and hard to replace. Once technicians learn a workflow, switching costs show up in every ticket. Choose for the next two years, not the next afternoon.

Start with platforms. If your users live on Windows but your techs carry MacBooks, both ends must work. Mobile hosts matter for warehouse scanners and Android kiosks; mobile clients matter when someone needs to approve a session from a phone. Linux is still common on tills and lab machines. A missing platform is not a “later” feature if that is where the fire is.

Then look at how a session starts. Can a user run a helper without installing? Can you pre-install a host for unattended work? Mass deployment (MSI, pkg, a scripted Linux package) matters as soon as you have more than a handful of devices. Address books, groups, and role-based permissions matter as soon as two technicians share a queue.

Security questions to ask out loud: is the session encrypted end to end? Can you force two-factor on the console? Can you disable file transfer per group? Is there an audit trail you could hand to a customer? “We use TLS” is a start, not a complete answer.

Performance is subjective until you test on the worst link you actually have. A tool that looks fine on office fibre can smear on a rural DSL line or a congested guest Wi-Fi. Try text-heavy apps, a second monitor, and a video call on the same connection. Note wake-from-sleep and reconnect after a VPN flap.

Cost is not only a sticker price. Count concurrent sessions, managed devices, and whether “unlimited users” still meters connections. AnyDesktops itself is free; other tools in this category often are not. On-premises options from some vendors cost more but keep session metadata inside a network that already has a policy.

Finally, treat brand search with care. Searching for a well-known product name will mostly return that product. Compare on features, not on who bought the ads. If you are evaluating AnyDesktops, we are a separate product in the same category — not a rebadge of anyone else. Join the waitlist if the checklist above matches what you need.
